Below, Ed Sheeran has been taking a break from his live shows and social media, Tuesday’s announcement was his first post in a while.
The singer and his wife Cherry Seaborn first met at school when Sheeran was just 11. Some years after being apart, they reconnected in the summer of 2015 and began dating. Sheeran proposed in December of 2017, and the pair got married in January 2019.
Last year, the couple appeared in their first music video together for his single “Put It All on Me,” where they were seen in their London apartment dancing and cuddling for the camera.
After Tuesday’s announcement on his Instagram, Ed Sheeran’s fans have been on a guessing frenzy as to the origin of his daughter’s name, Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran, with some fans relating the name (Lyra) to one of the main characters of Sir Philip Pullman’s popular fantasy trilogy, His Dark Materials, and speculating that this is what inspired Sheeran.
The 29-year-old singer/songwriter is a noted fan of Pullman Has on occasion chose His Dark Materials as his book choice on the BBC radio program, Desert Island Discs, in 2017. At the time, Sheeran described the books as “the greatest love story ever told”.
Although it is unclear whether the name “Antarctica” came from His Dark Materials, but much of the first book in the trilogy, Northern Lights, is set in the Arctic.
